Books are the best! I can't imagine my childhood, or my adulthood, without them.

I teach composition at the college level, and my research is about best practices in applying social media to college composition courses. Although I love to teach and adore my students, I don't think I'd survive even one week in the K-12 classroom. Thank you, K-12 teachers, for your tireless and often-thankless work; I can't believe the amazing work you do despite enormous financial and logistical constraints.

I teach music k-4 in a building of 500 students. I meet with each of 20 classes once a week for 50 minutes. I use visuals whenever I can to enhance understanding and to spark interest. During each class, we sing move and play instruments. I often share a book during class. If the book has song lyrics, I sing the book as I turn the pages. If the book is has rhyme, rhythm, or repetition, I may use it to inspire a drumming lesson. If the book is a story, we may dramatize it and improvise an instrumental accompaniment.

Hi Mrs. Squeglia! My sister Lanakila donated the book "Let it Shine" this afternoon, and your thank-you note to her was so charming that I thought I'd send you a book too. Also, I'm a graduate student in a program for DIgital Media Studies + Rhetoric, Composition, and Literacy, so anybody who's teaching K-12 multi-literacies through music + books is a hero to me. Thanks so much for all your hard work, and I hope your students enjoy the book.
